Why choose an independent midwife?

A midwife is an autonomous practitioner who specialises in caring for women and their babies during pregnancy, birth and for the first few weeks after the baby is born. With an in-depth knowledge and understanding of the physiology and psychology of childbirth, midwives are best placed to support women and their families through this amazing process. Within the UK, all midwives – whether employed within the NHS or independent midwives - must be registered with the Nursing and Midwifery Council, and their professional practice defined by the Midwives Rules and Code of Conduct. In addition, every midwife works closely with a supervisor of midwives, whose role it is to increase protection of the public by providing support, advice and guidance to individual midwives on practice issues whilst making sure the midwife complies with the Midwives rules.

Independent Midwives are fully qualified midwives who, in order to practice the midwife's role to its fullest extent, have chosen to work outside the NHS in a self employed capacity. Care is tailored to meet your individual needs, and normally takes place within the comfort of your own home, at a time convenient to you. Throughout your pregnancy, birth and postnatal period, all your care will be provided by the midwives you have chosen, which encourages the development of a relationship based upon trust and respect between yourself and your midwife.

Professional Indemnity Insurance

Independent midwives are currently unable to obtain professional indemnity insurance for their practice. The continuity of care and individualised service offered by independent midwives encourages women to make fully informed choices about their pregnancy and birth that are appropriate for their individual circumstances, and to work in partnership with their midwife towards a positive birth experience.
